January 10, 2009 - Argentina Trip
*Why Argentina? *
Buenos Aires, the Pampas, Gauchos, Patagonia, Iguazu Falls, Tierra del Fuego and the Tango. They are all part of Argentina. Argentina is an enormous country, eighth largest in the world. Ranging from subtropical forests in the north, to the icy Antarctica in the farthest south, Argentina’s geography offers diverse year-round travel opportunities.
From some of the world’s tallest mountains and impressive waterfalls, to wide-open pampas and ancient forests, the beauty and variety promise something special for everyone.
Over the past few years, with the increasing rise in the Euro, the cost of travel to Europe has become higher and higher. Today the Euro stands at a rate of over 40% higher than the U.S. Dollar. At the same time, the U.S. Dollar has risen sharply against the Argentine Peso. Since Argentina is the closest thing to a European country in the Western Hemisphere, this means that now is an excellent time to visit. Not only does Argentina boast fabulous scenery, wonderful food (especially for those who love beef) but also world-class shopping.
Buenos Aires is one of the world’s great cosmopolitan cities and the one city in the Western Hemisphere that can be said to most resemble a European capital. Visiting Argentina at this time is also a great value. Whereas the high value of the Euro has made Europe quite expensive for many of us, Argentina is the closest you can get to being in Europe at 1960’s prices. First-class hotels, restaurants and, especially, shopping, are at extremely reasonable prices. And when it comes to shopping, we are not just talking about souvenirs, but high-end European fashions, shoes and leather goods.
While the natural beauty of Argentina is breathtaking, its cities, culture, and people also make the country a great place to visit and very unique. It has deep cultural ties to Europe, which are especially apparent in Buenos Aires with its broad avenues, excellent museums, great theater, world-class restaurants, a pulsating nightlife, plus much more. The multinational peoples of Buenos Aires have created a complex, energetic, and seductive port city that offers urban and urbane lifestyle and architecture that are markedly more European than any other in South America. Yet the city is neighborhood- or barrio-centered - composed of many small places, intimate details, and tiny events and interactions, each with a slightly different color, shape, and character.
