A brief summary from Senator Bingaman about what he will say in his talk:  Our energy challenge crisscrosses our economic policy, climate change, and our international relations.  Until recently, we saw our energy challenge as a domestic problem:  The need to reduce the amount of foreign oil we import.  But today we know the problem is much larger than that and of a different nature, made more complicated by global warming and the developing world’s need for cheap and abundant energy.  The global energy challenge is to change the way the world produces, stores, distributes, and uses energy so as to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  It is to shift, not just our own economy, but the global economy to clean energy sources.  I will talk about how we can improve government policies to accelerate the development of the new technologies we will need to tackle the energy challenge.

Some Information about the Presenter:  Jeff Bingaman grew up in Silver City in a family with deep New Mexico small town roots.  His father was a science professor at Western New Mexico University, and his mother taught in the public schools.  He graduated from high school in Silver City.  After graduating from Harvard University, he earned a law degree at Stanford.  There he met fellow law student Anne Kovacovich.  After graduation, they married and returned to New Mexico, where they both practiced law, and their son, John, was born.  Jeff was elected New Mexico Attorney General in 1978.  In 1982, he won election to the United States Senate, and in 2006, was re-elected to serve a fifth term.
